Khurasan's Exterminators

I have had several stabs at painting these minis, but have never been happy with the colour scheme. Enter the redoubtable Spacejacker, whose ideas I have shamelessly purloined in the past. His idea for these was a battle worn ' US Forces in Vietnam' look, and I have to say that I think this is really quite appropriate. So, with doffed cap in hand, and enormous thanks to the Maestro, here are a few pictures of said minis.

I also acquired a couple of GZG's Cyclops Heavy Battle suits some long time ago, and thought that they might look agreeable in the same colours, so.....

Finally, a shot of the assembled throng.
I'm fairly happy with the result, but could use some constructive criticism, especially from the man whose ideas I frequently 'borrow'!

  1. Nice work, the two greens you used are visually distinct (amazing human eyes!) but close enough to still look like real military kit. It's definitely the "Vietnam war" look you were going for. The battlesuits look a bit odd with the troopers as they're apparently a higher tech level, but like the Colonial Marines in Aliens who they obviously ARE... these guys must look deceptively downmarket in their fatigues.

    1. Thanks Allison! I rather like the understated colours myself- definitely military, and my attempts at camouflage at this scale have been mixed. Of course, as stated above, all kudos go to Spacejacker whose colour scheme it was.

    1. Cheers Simon! That Spacejacker, he's got a good imagination for uniform schemes, something in which I am sadly lacking! Still, a good idea is a good idea, and so long as I credit the originator, I don't feel so bad about picking his brain. (Or hers, if that be the case!) Thanks for stopping by!

    Really like the gzg figures!

And by early next week, you should have some more to paint. Posted your Brits today!

    1. Many thanks Keith! The Battle suit is a nice sculpt, but I was a little lazy cleaning it up I'm afraid. There are a few mould lines and bits and pieces that I could have attended to a little better. That's great about the minis- I do hope you haven't been rushed specially, however, I am looking forward to receiving them!

    2. Gunrunner

Im trying to rush everyone's! They are now beyond late and that above all is disappointing!

    1. Hey Jay, how ya doin'? Thanks for the kind observations! It must be my ageing eyes, but the photos never seem as nice as the figures I look at when they've just been painted. I think it's something to do with these d*mn modern cameras that have a nasty habit of actually picking up detail- especially the detail you don't want seen! Ah well, I'll struggle on. Have a good weekend my friend!

  5. Excellent work Gunrunner, and thank you for the kind words!
I think you picked better greens than me... I had to do 4 highlight layers on the armor and kit to get it looking different to the fatigues, which just got 1.

You can steal as many schemes as you like from this guy, proud to be of help!

  6. Well, firstly thanks very much indeed, although I think you are being too kind, and secondly, I used the same greens as I think you suggested- Vallejo US Dark Green and Vallejo Russian Green. I did at least two highlights on the armour as I remember, but I still wish I could get the blend a little tidier, whilst retaining sufficient contrast at this scale. It's your tips that have helped me, and also, thanks for the green light to be a copycat- makes me feel less guilty! Best wishes Spacejacker.

    1. Hmm, interesting... My US Dark green is from a very old (5 years or so) "Panzer" set... It's possibly a different tone to yours, which looks a little more yellow...In a good way!

    2. Well, curiously, apart from those I have bought in the last year, all my Vallejo paints are at least of the same vintage as your US Dark Green, possibly a little older! Mine isn't from a set, so maybe that could account for the difference, I don't know. Still, I'mpleased to discover that the airbrush paints I got from Vallejo, the Extreme Tank set, have a version of both the greens we are talking about, so when the building work is done on the house and I get my study back, I can air brush some vehicles in a sympathetic colour scheme!

  7. Another job well done! Ground Zero should consider posting those pics of your cyclops suits on their store, after seeing the job you did on them I am definitely going to pick some up :)

  8. Wow, thanks Mike, I do feel flattered! It was certainly an interesting mini to paint, and I really do like Jon's 15mm stuff. Unfortunately for my wallet, I like a lot of other people's stuff too! Thanks for calling by.
