Terrain Project (Reloaded).

Well, as promised, a few pictures of my ongoing terrain extravaganza. It's a bit silly really-the hexes are only 70mm across, so I'm going to need a fair few for decent sized games. Still, despite my nagging doubts, I think I will continue to add more bases a few at a time. I have another untouched batch of 50 recently arrived from Warbases  that I will need to start work on.

This layout takes 35 bases, and makes a playing area of (approximately) 16 to 17 inches square-if it was square! There are a few goodies from GZG on the scene, the shack and large and small containers (these last are integral with the terrain, but the building is on its own base). and a couple of minis from Armies Army

I guess it may be a bit over complicated, a lot of  features in a confined space, but as I add more 'open' bases, I hope this will improve. (Mind you, it's great for cutting down LOS!).

.So that's the last of them. It's the first time I have put them all together, and although somewhat 'stylised' I'm quite pleased with the overall effect. I should soon have enough for a skirmish game if nothing else!

These weren't too much work, just a bit time consuming, but I've enjoyed this aspect as much as painting and, eventually, gaming again! Thanks for looking in!

  1. I like it. I agree it's a bit time consuming, but it looks good. Perhaps it you didn't actually use any clear area at all you could sprinkle the terrain hexes over a normal game board rather than making a complete hex map? It would save you some time. But I don't think it would look as good.

    1. Thanks very much! Spacejacker suggested something similar, and using them as 'scatter' terrain was my original plan. I can do this as I have some 2ftX2ft terrain tiles that I can use, so I have both options available. However, I agree with you-a complete table of hexes would just look a little better. Thanks for the feedback!

  2. That's looking really good. Never built much scenery but I've got a few ideas. Don't think I've got the patience for something like this though. Looking forward to seeing it finished

    1. Thank you! Actually, I'm not someone with a lot of patience myself, but this was not as tedious as might be expected. I'm just going to add to it a bit at a time. I need some river sections as well as a bucket load of eberything else! Thanks for the comments!

  3. Very very nice, maybe making some 2x2 pieces of open ground or forest etc. would speed things up? In any case, f you keep at it a bit at a time you'll be surprised at how much you amass!

    1. Thanks very much, Spacejacker. I would like to make up some larger tiles of open ground, even if it's just to put some decent sized hills on. Mind you, I'll have to work out what size to cut up the hexes so that they fit in the gaps-I'll need to read a big book of difficult sums! Thanks for the encouragement.

  4. I tried something similar once with polystyrene ceiling tiles, using a wooden hex template. It was designed for 6mm wargaming and was inspired by the old GeoHex terrain. Sadly I didn't glue enough sand on and when I started spraypainting they became deformed and pockmarked by craters.

Yours have come out fantastically though! I expect that things will speed up lots if you do a load of clear hexes, might be a boost to morale?

  5. Thanks very much, Paul, for the kind words. Yes, I have tried the polystyrene type things, but was unhappy with the flimsiness of them apart from having a similar problem to yourself. These wooden ones from Warbases are great, not too expensive but I take your point about producing plenty of 'clear' tiles for the sake of morale (and sanity!). I have contacted Martin at Warbases and he is happy to cut me some larger bases that are 'multiples of the 70mm ones, in various configurations so that I can produce a large area for hills, towns etc that will still fit in with the rest. many thanks for the suggestions!

  6. This looks fantastic. I have always like hex layouts and think you have a good balance of colour the green and earth mix which people often get wrong and use too strong a contrast between the green and very dark brown.

I think the striking yellow you used on the GZG building is also great. I am putting some terrain together for the Salute show and was keen to get the brightest look I could for the buildings which I wanted to stand out. Glad to see someone else making an eye catching feature of the buildings and terrain details.

  7. Hi Robin, Thanks very much for your observations-I get a lot of ideas from your blog and videos, very instructive! I must get around to looking at the Gruntz rules-I appear to have nearly every other set going! I have to confess, however, that I may have taken a leaf out of Spacejacker's book when it comes to the GZG shacks. I'm often short of original ideas, and let's face it, the boy is very good! I think a bit of colour, especially at this scale never goes amiss-we can't have everything green and khaki. The hexes are also good fun-I like the idea of the flexibility of them, or rather I will do when I've finished another hundred or so! At the moment I use them in conjunction with some 2'X2' terrain tiles from TSS that I bought years ago, but the plan is to be able to make a layout of at least 3foot square purely from the hexes. Thanks for looking.
