Yellow Peril!

It's been a busy ole week, both domestically and at work, but I have managed to dig this figure out from the pile, and splash a bit of paint on. If I'm not mistaken, it's a Mercenary from Critical Mass Games, and is a rather nice figure, as it happens. I included two frontal shots, as I missed the visor detail with the first one. I just love the trick of putting a little dot of white to simulate light reflection. So simple, yet so effective! Thanks to whoever came up with that one. I'm probably only thirty years behind everyone else.

I'm going to have to be a bit more liberal with the paint this weekend, but sadly it will all be on the dining room walls. Er, yes, I do mean emulsion, and not just a case of the shakes.

I even remembered to use the Picasa just for dummies picture improvement facility first this time, so I don't need to re-post.

Just for good measure, here's a shot of his sandwich and fizzy drink pouches.

  1. I'd never have predicted it, but that colour actually works on this guy. The brown pouches conveniently prevent the rear view from being too homogenously yellow. And, lovely visor of course, I gotta develop that technique.

    1. Thanks very much Allison. I was a little apprehensive about the colour initially, but with a couple of sepia washes, it brought it down to a sensible level. Having seen your painting, the visor is peanuts for you! Thanks for commenting!

  2. Nice!! You've taken yellow to a whole new level, and I like it! Also, nice close-up shots of the trooper.

    1. Thank you kindly young Jay! I thought I would try something a little brighter than normal! The pictures aren't too bad, but photography really isn't my thing, I am coming to realise. Ah well, so long as I still have fun painting and modelling, and kind remarks from decent people, i can struggle on!

    1. Thanks Keith, you are too kind! Spray white undercoat, base coat of GW Golden Yellow, 2 coats of sepia wash, Golden yellow highlight, then Golden Yellow + Bad Moon yellow for final highlight. Visor is dark blue, gradually lightened with white towards the bottom edge. I don't think anyone has asked me how I painted something- I'm flattered! Thanks for asking. Have a go and let's see the result.

  5. Im building up some converions for post apoc figures. Mostly my russians with gaskmask options and capes, varying weapons. Its not going to be max max 3 inspired. Hopefully some will have hazmat suits and I know from experiance how hard it is to get right. So top tips for me!

    2. Well, if I have helped in any small way, then I'm very glad. I'd like to see pictures of your conversions when they are done. I've recently done a head swap on one of your Rusks for a 'Bedouin' head from Peter Pig, but not painted it yet. Head swaps are a nice easy conversion, aren't they?

  6. Most of the time, they are easier :) I do all of my own head coversions,so they gotta be easy!

How were the sizes of the two?

    1. Not too bad- the PP head was a little small compared with your regular size, but not too much out of proportion. A little extra putty on the head scarf helped a little. If you can sculpt the figures you do, I wouldn't do yourself down about only finding head swaps easy. Personally, I couldn't envisage being able to sculpt a whole figure!

  7. I have created variant heads for my own use, they are sculpted against GZG and my own figures and Im finishing off more at the moment. I should have options for berets, wooly hat, bare headed, cold war gas mask variants and a modern gas mask variant. Ive also a Bedouin and russian fur cap. The idea is to use them as mix and match for post apoc/militia or the stalker universe type stuff. When I have a few of them, Ill pop some into the post for you
