Just a little post of pictures of Elhiem's British SAS in Gulf War colours. Lovely sculpts as always.
Possibly the packs/equipment are a bit bright, but I'm not stressing about it.

Also, I have several items of resin terrain from SandS Models to paint, the first of which is a distressed Toyota van. These are cracking models, and I have some street barricades primed and ready to go. I have painted this in a similar way to my figures- base colours blocked in, a suitable colour wash, then re-establish base colours and add highlights. Unfortunately, I haven't been fussy enough to fill in a few blow holes from the casting process- I know, a cardinal sin- so I apologise to all those less lazy than me!
Anyway, just a quick post. Have a good week all!

I found these figures particularly enjoyable to paint, with a wealth of detail (in common with all Elhiem figures), and attempted a 'Flora Digital' pattern which did not really come off, but I'm still relatively happy with the final appearance.
The Spetsnaz in GORKA suits were a pattern I found on the net, but I have seen a number of different ones. I am well aware that many details/colours may be inaccurate, but I'm not going to be too precious about it- life's too short!

I also managed a couple of pieces of scatter terrain while I was at it, the first cobbled together from a mixed bag of mis-cast items from 'SGT'S MESS' (a brilliant bag of stuff for this sort of thing)-

I'm not suggesting the standard is spectacular, and the pictures aren't the clearest, but the technique suits me, and gives more definition than my previous style. I have now started stripping paint from some more figures to re-work them, but I won't be doing all of them- too many nail varnish remover fumes!
To freshen things up, I then decided to try a different scale and era, so having seen some fantastic painted figures on the internet and various blogs of modern warfare miniatures from Elhiem Figures, I ordered a batch and got painting.

My first efforts at this scale were okay-ish, but not a patch on others that I had seen.

I also bought some minis from Liberation miniatures, and found them to be more in the style of the Britannia offerings, but I haven't taken any pictures of those yet.

After clearing out a cupboard, I discovered a large number of painted and unpainted minis from Britannia's Vietnam range- poorly painted- so they've been stripped off and I'm working my way slowly through those.

This is one of the re-paints, and it brings me to my latest revelation. I have always avoided black undercoating in the past, but I have now realised that I have been wasting my time a little. I know that those of you who are experienced painters will know the pros and cons of various different undercoat/primer colours- I guess black/white/grey etc all have their applications, but the beauty for me is the way a black undercoated figure is so forgiving- missed a little bit? It just looks like shadow or similar. So easy for scruffy daubers like me!

I returned recently to 20mm WW2 minis from Britannia (I used to have a sizeable collection when poor old Dave Howitt was still with us) but they were sold a long time ago. I started off with a few-black undercoat by now- so here are some...
Finally, some modern German troops kitted out for 'Afghan'.

All the figures in the last eleven pictures have had the black primer treatment. I painted some other modern Germans in exactly the same colour scheme as these with a grey undercoat, but in comparison they look dull and washed out. I suppose for reality's sake, that is probably okay, but for table top miniatures, I like a bit more contrast.

If any of you more experienced types out there would like to give me some pointers on how to improve my technique, I would be grateful to hear them.
I certainly wouldn't want to offend anyone by leaving them out, as I find something of interest in all the blogs I follow (well, otherwise there's no point in following, right?), so as Anne O'Leary has done, I should just like to divert your attention to the list of followers on my blog page. I follow a variety of bloggers, not all 15mm sci fi gamers, and I learn something from all of them, even if I'm not a regular comment maker.

I really enjoy the support and generosity of all those bloggers I follow, and would commend you to take a look at any or all of them on my blog roll. This is a wonderful community we enjoy, we painters/modellers/gamers, and I just want to include as many as possible.

Best wishes to all!Gunrunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00428966187307220717noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7229145415069940061.post-39672219493911142652014-05-24T14:54:00.002-07:002014-05-24T14:54:21.312-07:00Stand Off at the Precinct HouseSergeant Kanter paused as he stirred his coffee. He had been in mid-conversation with Officer Dien who was taking a leisurely stroll along the local area, when his subordinate gave what seemed to be a strangled cough. In the background, Kanter thought he heard a burst of automatic gunfire.

'Dien? Did you hear that?' DIEN!

The only thing audible was the hissing of the comm set, and the gentle sighing of his officer's last breath, though he didn't quite believe it at that moment. In the street, a couple of citizens peered around corners to see what was happening.

'Narlo, get up on the roof and see if you can spot Dien down by the square- he's dropped off the grid.'

Officer Narlo dragged himself off the chair, pulled an assault rifle from the rack and headed for the short ladder that led to the ceiling trapdoor. He disengaged the security clamps and pushed the trap upwards. The cool air struck him as he levered himself on to the rough surface of the flat roof, then he drifted across to the low walls of the observation platform and squinted down the street towards the statue of Colonel Cordoba, astronaut explorer and Governor of the City three decades ago, that graced the column in the centre of Distral Square. His eyes flickered in disbelief as he saw the prostrate body of Dien at the foot of the statue. Before he could register his horror, a movement beyond the square caught his eye. Several shadowy figures were emerging from the distant buildings, dressed in an assortment of untidy rags and hoods, but with glimpses of body armour peeking out from between the folds. Without bothering with his comm mike he shouted loudly through the trapdoor-

'Rebels, Sarge, they're coming down the street! Pablo's dead!'

Kanter nearly froze, then instinct kicked in and he reached for the direct comm link to the Army barracks on the edge of the precinct.

'Priority One for Captain Lerner- insurgent incident this precinct- follow this link for location, enemy strength unknown.' He signed off without waiting for a reply. He turned to look at the prisoner in the corner of the station house who was bound and blindfolded. He knew immediately why the rebels were daring to venture to this part of the city, so close to the Barracks. If this man was taken to the Government offices for interrogation, his information could harm the Rebel cause considerably.
With an economy that defined the attitude of the Army, he heard a voice issue from the comm set that merely stated-

' Response Squad en route your position.'

Meanwhile, on the roof, Narlo watched the Rebels move swiftly towards the station house.

He spotted another rebel squad to the right of the first, sidling up the right hand side of the street, as quickly as they dare- time was short to liberate their comrade and they knew it. Narlo slipped the safety catch on his weapon and sent two bursts down the length of the street, but with no success.

As the echoes of his first volleys started to die away, he could see from his vantage point the stealthy appearance of a small squad of troopers from the recon company garrison as they cautiously moved through the alleyways to his left. Dressed in urban design camouflaged uniforms, they looked hard and competent. Seemingly, without a spoken order, they fired their weapons at the first rebel squad by the walls of the square, but the concrete around the monument protected them from the flying rounds.
Undeterred, they fired again and watched with satisfaction as two of the enemy crashed to the ground with fatal injuries, and another wheeled away with blood seeping from a wound.

Narlo dragged his eyes away from the sudden action in time to see a third group of rebels running towards the vacant lot further to the east, heading for the rear of the building.

Down by the square, the Army and the first rebel squad were engaged in a fierce firefight, but neither side were able to inflict any casualties. Narlo barely had time to register this fact when several bursts of fire made him duck down behind the parapet of his rooftop position. Bobbing back up, he retaliated with a couple of bursts of his own but to no avail, as the rebels were now close to the wall of the station house. Sgt Kanter pointed his pistol through the window and loosed off a couple of rounds and the assailants swerved away unhurt. At the rear of the building, the third rebel squad had arrived inside the compound walls. The station house shook as it received concentrated fire at the doors both front and rear, but they held fast.

In desperation, aware that time was ebbing away, the rebels continued to pour fire onto the doors of the building to try and gain entrance. Down the street, the army troopers suffered an injury as a soldier had his armour opened up, but he only sustained a light wound and fired back with extra venom.
The Recon squad leader was growing tired of the fruitless exchanges of fire with an enemy safely hunkered down behind solid walls, so he issued the order to withdraw, and his men followed him down an alley away from the immediate threat, and towards the station house.

Sergeant Kanter pointed his sidearm through the window again and shot a rebel trooper dead, right in front of the station house. Looking around himself, the rebel leader spotted the army troopers emerging from the shadows of the buildings behind him, looked at his comrade face down in the road in a spreading pool of crimson, then grunted into his comm mike the order to withdraw. In seconds, the rebels melted away out of the city as the members of the Recon squad arrived at the door of the Police building.

Later that day, a TV camera crew visited the area to report on the day's action.

'Record it in the junk yard Semmi- more atmosphere.'

This was an AAR of a solo game I played today whilst listening to the torrential rain down here in Wales. I tried the USEME rules, and I'm not entirely convinced I followed them perfectly, but they worked just fine for me. This is the first time I have actually set up my 'Cityscape' terrain boards, and I was quite happy with the way they turned out. The rebel figures were, appropriately, Sahadeen from Rebel Minis, the Recon squad were from the GOTA Clan range from Khurasan, and the TV crew were from Oddzial Osmy. Buildings were mostly from Mad Mecha Guy, with two from Warbases (the ruins), and one from Critical Mass Games. Roads were also from Mad Mecha.

Today I ordered a set of the Gruntz rules and downloaded the Barracks app, and I'd like to see if the card based system I've heard about can be adapted for solo play .

Lastly, I should like to thank my blog buddy Jay for nominating me for a Liebster award. I shall find time tomorrow to nominate some blogs that I enjoy but it's getting late, and I'm whacked, and I want to post this tonight.

If you have managed to struggle through this post, thanks for persevering. It's my first attempt to report a game as a narrative, and I quite like this as a way of summing up a game. Any helpful tips more than welcome!

Thanks for looking.
However, in a message to Mike at Rebel, purely in the interest of letting him know he had a few 'rogues' in the locker, he very generously insisted on sending me some replacements, which I'm looking forward to. He outsources the casting of figures, and with the volume he deals with, it's impossible for him to check everything, but I would just like to say 'Thanks very much, Mike'.

So, here are a few of Rebel's minis that I have recently daubed with a bit of Vallejo-

In the last post, all my Sahadeen were in the same colour scheme, so as a rebel force/insurgents, I have decided to mix it up a bit.

Now a few of Rebel's Titan Scouts.....

These next pictures include some Rebel Minis, The Scene, Oddzial Osmy, and Khurasan examples- they are Special Forces squads, normal and urban camo.

Sadly, these next pictures aren't focussed well enough, but they are the downed flyer/mecha crew from Khurasan, followed by my first attempt at a 'Space Demon' from the same stable.

Next, a sniper from Khurasan...

An un-named mini from Khurasan-

And finally, a simple entry for the caption competition- no prize of course, 'cos it's a no-brainer!

Thanks to anyone for looking in- it's a bit picture heavy, so thanks for persevering (if you've got to the end that is!).
Gunrunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00428966187307220717noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7229145415069940061.post-66086554291604899072014-03-30T12:32:00.000-07:002014-03-30T12:32:06.629-07:00Thank you Brigade Models and latest painting rush......At the end of December, I sent an order to Brigade Models for a collection of their 15mm sci fi buildings. When I realised it had taken rather longer than I was expecting to arrive, I e-mailed the company to see if it had been sent. Within a day, Tony had replied to tell me that the order had been sent out some time ago, but they would send a replacement asap. It arrived fairly soon afterwards and I just wanted to thank him, and Brigade Models, for taking my word about the disappearance of the order.I just felt that this sort of customer service needs to be highlighted when it happens- thank you gentlemen!

Now, after my '50 Up' post, I've managed another 20 minis, starting off with the brilliant GOTA Clan figures from Khurasan. I've posted pictures of the urban camo previously, these next pictures are of regular fatigues.

There is some great detail on these minis, and in the four pictures there are representatives from each of the range's packs.

I wanted to have some fanatical cultist figures somewhere in the mix, so I opted for the human cultists from Khurasan's Cult of Andromeda range, so here they are......

Interesting figures, particularly the face mask/respirators. I was going for a 'ceremonial' weapon look to the hardware so decided on the silver/brass combination- a bit Space Opera, but although I'm not entirely convinced it has worked, I think I'll leave it alone.

Finally, a black suited bodyguard type figure from The Scene- security for the holders of high office in my fantasy world.

That's it then. Thanks again to Tony, and thanks to you for looking in!
Now for someone like myself who is neither the best or quickest painter around, I have to confess I'm quite pleased with that. It may have something to do with cancelling my Sky subscription and spending more time in the evening with the radio on in front of my painting area. Add to the figures my urban terrain, extra bits added to buildings (vents, doors, air con units etc) and such, I feel that I have been more productive. Mind you, the gaming side has taken a back seat, but I want to finish the urban terrain first to use in my latest gaming venture.

Anyhow, here is a picture of the 50 of 2014:

I managed to matt varnish everything this morning in the lovely sunshine here in the UK, except the latest offerings I did yesterday from one of the new GZG ranges. Elsewhere in the above picture are minis from Khurasan, Rebel (and GZG), with Gecko scout cars from Old Crow.

The last pictures are the aforementioned figures from GZG (I think it's the Neu Swabian League) but they are really nice sculpts. These are going to be the 'heavy' infantry, whereas the Khurasan GOTA Clan figures (second row back in urban camo, and one either end in normal fatigues) will be the light infantry. Dodgy pictures......

So there we have it. I hope to do many more minis this year and make it a bumper one, but even if I continue apace, I shall barely scratch the surface of my lead pile. Still, lucky to have a lead pile I guess!

Thanks for looking!
(Please note that these minis have been gloss varnished, but not yet had a coat of Testors matt).

This is, as I say, a very simple paint job (I hear you all agree!). Steel base, black wash, drybrush steel again, and detail of armour plates picked out in white. With an adjustment of the armour plate colours, this scheme could be fairly universal for robot warriors in many guises I think.

Before I wrap up, here is a picture of my Old Crow Gecko raiders with new paint job.
Just got to repaint the gunners and find an extra gunner and weapon for the one on the left. I've got an interesting rail gun from Oddzial Osmy somewhere......mmm....

I haven't been this productive in ages!

Firstly I painted 9 figures from Rebel Minis Sahadeen range. I have always liked the look of these minis, so finally ordered some. I'm sorry to say that I was quite disappointed with them- not the style or sculpt of them, but sadly the standard of the castings was really poor in many cases. I'm sure a more competent modeller than myself could have made a bit more of them, but I just cleaned up the worst and carried on regardless. Having said all that (sorry Rebel Mike, I don't mean to be harsh) I actually like the style of the Sahadeen, with the breathing masks, goggles and 'cowl' type head gear.
I took a couple of pictures, but nothing too exciting.

Having finished these, I moved on to some minis from Khurasan which I ordered a little while ago, namely the 'Gota' Clan. I am so pleased with these that I have already sent for some more with my recently placed order, along with a rather smart mini on a jet 'board' from the new Andromeda range, amongst others.

Anyhow, in keeping with the theme of my previous post outlining figures to be used in a city setting, I painted these figures in an urban style camo. As I have stated in a previous post somewhere, I'm not entirely convinced that I can pull off a successful camo paint job at this scale, but I wanted to have a go. Helpful comments welcome, by the way.

I have to say, these are really lovely sculpts and castings, hence a second order!

I realise that as this blog isn't sufficiently interesting for many people to comment on, and I quite understand, I don't really have anything significant to say, or different to show. Therefore, I have one or two ideas to do something a bit different with it, more in the line of a continuing story, involving one city and surrounding area, and the 'chronicles' (that should figure in the title perhaps) of that paricular sector. There are things flying around in my simple mind that need consolidating, but I think I will give it a try. I think the posts by Jay of 'Jay's Miniature Enterprise' blog may be something to do with it. I don't mean to copy his blog style- who could?- but to try and create a more intimate and local background rather than a planet-wide theatre of operations, and follow the stories and characters that are involved.

We'll see what happens!
I sent an order to Khurasan when they opened up after Christmas, and within days they had posted pictures of a new release, namely the PNHE Cyborg Agents. After a quick e-mail exchange, Jon kindly added them to my order. I loved the colour scheme on the Khurasan website, and saw no reason to do any different, so in full Matrix mode I copied the hell out of them.

Now I know it's not very clever, but I don't have much of an imagination, so thanks to whoever painted these for the vendor. These are terrific sculpts IMHO, and with the leather-clad look could feature in all sorts of games.

Also in the same order I received the Zebra Kilo team, miniatures that I have painted in the past, but I wanted to re-do them for more general use, ie 5150SA, 5150NB, and zombie games. I painted them quite differently before but, and you are going to have to take my word for it, even though I have previous, I didn't realise that I was copying the website colour scheme again (well, almost, apart from the helmet colour). Possibly I did realise on some subconscious level... Anyway, I wanted them themed with the PNHE Agents, so went with the black leather look again.

Once again, really nice sculpts, possibly by the same artist/sculptor. The black/grey colours work really well with them I believe, and my next batch will be Khurasan's 'Police Bots', which will fill out this 'police' themed force.

Apologies if the pictures aren't too clear- I took them with a little Canon Sureshot, so not as crisp as I might have got with my other camera (with flat battery as it turns out), but as those of you who kindly look in to this blog know, I'm no great shakes as a photographer anyway.

Thanks to some kind comments about my last post, I have added some detail to the Mad Mecha Buildings, such as vents, and some computer type terminals to act as vending machines and cash dispensers and suchlike, and am currently awaiting a small order from The Scene with things like air conditioning units which I can attach and create a bit more interest. So thanks for those suggestions.

Right, off to paint the 'Bots' before enthusiasm wanes. Thanks for looking in!
Gunrunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00428966187307220717noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7229145415069940061.post-12005850645515280512014-02-02T12:47:00.000-08:002014-02-02T12:47:16.652-08:00Urban DevelopmentIt has been a while since my last post, but I haven't been entirely idle on the modelling front. I wanted to create some urban terrain for regular wargaming, and I thought I might try a little zombie bashing, and 5150 New Beginnings. I have had a number of buildings from Mad Mecha Guy, pictures posted before, but I wanted to make a bit more of them. So, I attached them to some 150 X 150mm MDF bases (from Warbases) to give a little uniformity, and the appearance of a prefabricated colony. I also wanted a scruffy and neglected look, so used a few washes, yet this isn't apparent from the pictures.

First up, a single storey commercial establishment with a suitably unspecific name. All the bases of these buildings were marked out with a fine permanent marker, then the joints dry-brushed with GW's Bestial Brown. I think I may have been a little over-enthusiastic here, as less is probably more.

Now a two storey 'shop' with posters printed out from a quick trawl on the internet, and the sign on the roof made from an offcut of MDF that came with my order from Mad Mecha Guy- Joseph doesn't waste much, and sent me a nice selection of bits and pieces with my order.

A two storey habitation block with a feeble attempt at some graffiti....

and Quite obviously a severely un-secure banking establishment. I couldn't think of anything clever for the name so stuck to the obvious. These rooftop signs aren't glued in anyway, just held with a couple of 'pins' so I can change them when and if.

Another two storey commercial property with different window configuration.

I could have done a bit more with this 'shelter' but by this time at night my enthusiasm is waning!

Police Department- very utilitarian. I used the aluminium mesh that you can buy from car part shops for mending bodywork in all the windows- maybe for a 'Precinct 39' type scenario.

And so to 'Kelly's Bar and Grill'. I thought it would probably have obscured windows, what with the pole dancing and all, so covered them over with some picture mounting card.

These two buildings are from Warbases, but I've tried to dress them up with broken 'tile' pieces which I bought some time ago and never used, plastic girder, plastic tube for pipework etc. It wasn't until I'd put them on a base that I made more of an effort with them.

I just took one of the bases and threw a few things on to make a scruffy vacant lot. Exotic future crate from Atenociti, skip from The Scene, but I can't remember the origin of the vehicle.
This is just another improvised base, with a plastic container for the column, a mini from CP Models, I think, an MDF 15mm base for the plaque and some walls I picked up at a wargame show. Very simple stuff I know, but good cover nevertheless.
This is my first attempt at zombies. these are from Rebel Minis, but I also have some on order from Khurasan. I'm fairly happy with the result. I painted the flesh a sort of mid grey and highlighted it, then picked out top detail with Vallejo Game Colour Dead Flesh. I've seen much better on your blogs out there, but this will do.
Finally, I have seen pictures posted of various bloggers work spaces, so I took a quick picture of my own chaos.....we're all the same!!
Alden peered around the outcrop of rock on which he was leaning at the low building in front of him. His mind went back to the recording he had heard in the Comms centre an hour before-

'There seems to be a disturbance outside, I....I think I hear gunshots....clear the room everybody......(interference).....where's the.......Oh God, what IS that?.................(muffled shout from another scientist)......Dr. Olsen, are you alright? For God's sake, can't you............(silence).

Alden could just make out the body of a security guard on the floor to the right of the research facility building, the three Hab units standing behind. This was a remote scientific research station, very small, but regularly served with supplies from a light shuttle that called twice a month. The work was relatively unimportant, but all attempts were being made to gain greater knowledge of this Northern Hemisphere of the planet, discovered a mere 68 years before. The South was settled in many places, with some large towns and even cities. Large mining corporations, eager to exploit the vast riches that no doubt lay beneath the surface of this enormous planet, had set up mining camps, then huge facilities and refineries, taking advantage of lucrative licences issued by a government in a hurry to establish a stable world, and who needed resources to be supplied as quickly as possible to achieve their aims. The military, of course, were seconded all over the planet to address the paranoia felt in higher echelons that other greedy civilisations were eyeing this, their greatest prize.

Alden muttered into his comms mike; 'Jena, are you in position?'

Corporal Jena's voice came clearly through his earpiece, 'Copy that'.

'Moving now, three possible contacts detected in the area, all to our front at the moment, hold where you are'

'Copy'.

The Sergeant looked back at his fire team and signalled that they were moving out towards the research building. As they carefully stalked up to the west side of the building, Alden kept an eye on the screen of his wrist data unit. The three red blips were moving slowly towards them, converging on the clutch of buildings.

A bead of perspiration trickled down his temple- was the data feed correct? This planet still had some magnetic variations that the comms boys hadn't yet worked out. Was there someone or something waiting for them beyond the building? He whispered into his mike again: 'Jena, move into those woods to the north of the facility, and see if you can get eyes on anything that might be giving me these readings.'

'Moving now Sarge' came Jena's reassuring voice.

Another blip moved on the wrist display, and Alden realised that he had to make a move or they could be overwhelmed if these possible enemy forces moved around them. Making the decision, he motioned the fire team forward across the front of the building and swung around the corner to find the cause of the radar blips. Five figures wearing curious red-sheened body armour were crouching in the lee of the building, their unfamiliar weapons to hand. They wore no helmets, and their skin was a startling blue colour, surmounted with hair of an even lighter blue. All this information entered Alden's brain a split second before he gave the order to open fire. His well-drilled team instantly poured fire on to the alien figures, and watched three figures go down instantly.

Recovering from their surprise, the red-clad monsters returned fire, their laser rifles scything at the troopers and dropping one. Behind them, Alden could see another squad of 'Reds' turning in their direction, weapons coming up to train on them. Before he could call a warning, this second squad opened fire at them, carelessly aiming through the remainder of their comrades, as if these lives were immaterial. Sergeant Alden felt the searing burn as a Red with a heavy laser targeted him and sliced through his armour as if it was just so much paper. As he fell forward he saw the other members of his fire team had fallen, smoke whisping from armour that had been cut open with ease. In his earpiece he could hear excited shouting, but could not make it out, and gently slipped away.

To the north of the facility, Corporal Jena had been listening to the firefight through his own earpiece, and when the cries of pain and fear crackled through it, he frantically called out to Alden and other members of the fire team, but received no reply. He led his own team across a clearing and took cover just inside the tree line to see if he could spot the enemy that had accounted for the lives of his comrades. He just had time to make out the positions of these unearthly creatures before he directed fire from comrades. He saw one alien figure stagger back and fall under the weight of fire, but the enemy seemed to have no fear of being caught in the open, and stood their ground, returning fire with grim ferocity, slicing the trees and undergrowth with searing beams of light. From the corner of his eye, Jena spotted the survivors of the first firefight skirting around the front of the building, re-appearing on the other side, to add their firepower to the assault.

He watched as one alien hefted the heavy laser on to his shoulder and swung round to his bearing. He was no coward, but someone had to return and give a report to Headquarters. With a brief glance, he looked towards his fallen brothers, then took the remainder of his team and melted into the woods.

So, this is a 'dramatised' account of a solo game I had today- very simple and quick, using some expanded FUBAR rules kindly supplied to me by Vulture, and bolting on the solo/campaign rules from SA5150 with my own variations. The indigenous troops were all 'Regular', and the Aliens were Veteran, my thinking being that any expeditionary or scout force would be made up of good quality troops. Miniatures were from Rebel, Armies Army, and the casualty figure was from GZG. The Research building was from Critical Mass Games, the Hab domes from The Ion Age, and the grav sled from Old Crow. The game was played over my own hand made hex terrain from Warbases.

It was a quick and simple game, mostly to test out the amalgamation of these rule sets, but it was a bit of fun. I have a hankering to expand the background of my imaginary universe, with the threat from the ruthless 'Red Menace', and incorporate the story into similar AARs, but with more thought and detail- does anybody have any ideas or (polite) suggestions as to whether I should pursue this?
Obviously I am no Sci Fi author, but I feel I would like to build the story and introduce actual characters (well, apart from poor old Sergeant Alden- his race is run!).

Anyway, if you have struggled down this far, thanks very much for persevering, and if you have commented, thanks for that too!

Oh, and Happy New Year for next week!

Since I started this blog, I have agonised over the standard of my figure painting, as a lot of posts I see display a level of competence that I cannot possibly emulate. However, I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that if I want to move some of the enormous backlog of minis I would like to paint, then I will have to compromise a bit, so these figures, and the Unknown Enemy figures from my previous post have had a fairly simple treatment, using washes and dry brushing. For the wargames table, I guess they are good enough!

So, here are the minis I have painted today, the PLA/Sino Forces from Armies Army:

Brush-on grey undercoat from Vallejo, base colour of GW Dheneb Stone, wash of Army Painter Strong Tone, then dry brush of base colour again- that's just about it, apart from boots and weapon details.

I also finished the rest of the Enemy Unknown, so here is a collective picture of these minis too:

I have made a start on the 'Hab' units I bought from The Ion Age recently. As usual, I have sort of pinched their colour scheme to a certain point, but it looked so effective! I like a well-weathered look, so plenty of staining and washes. They fit beautifully on the Warbases hexes I use for my terrain as well, so that's a bonus!

All the above items need varnishing and static grass adding in order to hide the lack of attention to detail in the basing, but as I'm away for a few days from tomorrow, I wanted to make a quick post before I go.

Having seen Eli's preview of some of the new releases fron Jon at GZG, I committed a few measly quid on 4 packs of the new sculpts. They are really good, and Jon was kind enough to send me a few samples of upcoming ranges too- they are all great sculpts- and so my determination to cut back on hobby spending will be sorely tested. However, thanks Jon, I'm really looking forward to painting these guys too!

Thanks for looking in as always, and helpful comments are welcome!

They are some of the latest offerings from Armies Army, and come under the heading of Enemy Unknown. Anyway, I promised Keith from Armies Army that I had some of his minis in the pipeline, so here they are, unvarnished and without a bit of finishing on the bases. a very unchallenging paint scheme I'm afraid, but I actually like the simplicity.
I would like to paint some of the PLA/Sino minis soon as well, but my hobby time is limited, like so many of you out there! Thanks for taking the time to take a look!

Gunrunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00428966187307220717noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7229145415069940061.post-64832339474361779922013-10-26T09:20:00.000-07:002013-10-26T09:20:02.024-07:00Post ScriptI have just realised that I didn't post pictures of a Critical Mass Games building that I had also painted. These buildings are top-notch as far as I am concerned, and paint up beautifully- they even have detailed interiors (well, reasonably detailed) which is great for resin cast units. Anywho, I love 'em! Piccies......
I suppose they could do with a little bit of flock/dead static grass at the foot of the walls, but I can still do that.

Gunrunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00428966187307220717noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7229145415069940061.post-65875023013566716332013-10-26T03:42:00.000-07:002013-10-26T03:42:37.488-07:00I finally get off my big, fat.........I haven't made a post for quite a while, for various reasons which will be completely uninteresting, and for those bloggers who usually receive comments from me, I apologise for not giving you the due attention you deserve. So I'll just give a quick update on 'work' so far.

Some time ago I ordered some MDF buildings from Mad Mecha Guy, and then more recently bought the roads, walls, and paved area packs. One weekend I made the effort to paint all the road pieces, the pavement/sidewalk pieces, the paved areas, pedestrian crossings and various other things. I didn't bother with any clever shading- too lazy, and the etching on the MDF helped a little here- but got it done. So here are a few pictures of a small set-up using a fraction of what comes in these packs.
Sorry about the muddy looking brown between everything- that's just my tatty desk.

As you can probably see, I haven't bothered to paint the interiors of the buildings. I know, I know- no attention to detail.

I have also painted a few vehicles using the Mask sheets from Critical Mass Games, specifically the digital camo sheets. Using an air brush, I am reasonably satisfied with the result, though it may be too subtle to show well, but that is just my incompetence. The first vehicle is from Khurasan miniatures....

and the next two are from GZG.

I am slowly getting used to the airbrush, but as I don't have a permanent 'work station' I have to set it all up each time to use it- it can become a chore.

Now, bear with me a little longer, it will soon be over. Next up, some miniatures- NAC guncrews from GZG....

followed by a sniper crew from GZGs new Power Armour range....

and then the rest of this range that I have completed, support weapons included.

I also recently made a start on another of GZG's ranges- I believe it is the 'Republic of Arden' range for Tomorrow's War. I just think of them as modern French Foreign Legion! This picture isn't very clear I'm afraid, and the fact that they have been gloss coated but not matt doesn't help the situation. However, on the plus side, you can see the Tricolor on the shoulder pads!

So finally, I took advantage of an offer from 15mm.co.uk/The Ion Age and ordered a three pack of their 'prefabricated hab' buildings. I'm really pleased with them- nice clean castings, and best of all, because of the shape, they fit beautifully on the terrain hexes I use!

So that's it. Thanks for spending the time if you have read this far and not dropped off to sleep. I have been challenged, sort of, to a paint off by Barks from 'Wargaming with Barks' and Allison from 'The Painting Agency' to have a go at a Khurasan figure or two that completely don't resemble characters from a certain '50% existence' game (if you get my drift). You know the one. Both Allison and Barks have made outstanding jobs with their renditions, so I don't think mine will be half as good, but I'll have a go....might not be this week though!

Thanks for looking in!
Last week I found some GZG figures I purchased a long time ago that had slipped way back in the queue. These are from the Free Cal-Tex range, and upon closer inspection, I thought the detail suggested some sort of Police or Paramilitary Police Force. Decision made, I wanted to depict something that was fairly obviously police, but with a bit of a difference. What I have finished up with is something a little more Space Opera then Hard Sci Fi, but I was reasonably pleased. What's that you say? Pictures? Oh all right then, you've persuaded me.

A very simple colour scheme of Vallejo Prussian Blue, highlighted with the addition of increasing amounts of white, GW Codex Grey body armour/equipment/helmet, picked out in white, weapon is Vallejo German Grey, details picked out in Codex Grey.

Here they are, sneaking up on a suspected terrorist holed up in the building to the right, while one of his accomplices is held under guard. Buildings from Mad Mecha Guy (I love 'em!).

That bloke in the window is asking for it- a pistol against all that firepower!!!
Here they are with the paddy wagon!

The other figures I have painted this week are more of the new GZG power armour figures. I added a picture of one of these minis last post, so here are the others I have done recently.

Nowhere near as nice as the camouflage painted versions of these minis that Mr. Harold displayed on his blog 'Clear Horizons' but I'm quite happy. Once again a simple colour scheme- Vallejo Russian Green base, Army Painter Strong Tone wash, highlights in base + white a couple of times, equipment in Vallejo German Grey, again highlighted by the addition of white. Weapon is German Grey detail picked out in GW Codex Grey. Visor is Vallejo Gold (996).

Sneaking through the woods, power armour whirring smoothly.....

Having tried various varnish options, I am using a paint on gloss varnish from Games Workshop, followed by a spray coat of their 'Purity Seal' (almost) matt varnish. I have been reasonably happy with this solution, although I am running out of the brush on gloss varnish, so would welcome some suggestions for an alternative, but having heard so much about it, I made an order to Atenociti for some Testors Dullcote. Well, I tried it this morning, and I have to say I am rather impressed. I quite like the finish- in fact, all the above figures have been coated in this stuff. Usually I post pictures of minis pre-varnish rather than post, as I tend to think they look a little better, but I thought I would risk it, and it seems to have paid off!

So, that's it for now. As I say, if anyone can suggest a good protective gloss varnish, and I am gradually moving away from GW stuff by the way, I would be most grateful to hear from you. Well, it would be great to hear from you anyway!

All the best 'til next post. Now, where's my barbecue mitt...........

It's a mixed bag, back to Sci Fi from the Napoleonics, from 3 different manufacturers:

First up, my Commander from Armies Army's Neo-Brits:-

This is a quirky figure- perhaps not anatomically correct- but this style is what draws me to these figures, they have a certain charm.

To back him up, another Armies Army mini, toting, as you can see, a vicious looking minigun. Any miniature with a minigun is all right by me! I believe this figure is in power armour, judging by the improved carapace armour and the exo-skeleton support to the legs....

Following that, here is another figure in power armour (I believe), from GZG, one of their latest releases. I saw some of these painted up on Mr. Harold's blog, Clear Horizons (and if you don't follow it yet, do yourself a favour and trip along there- fantastic blog) and it motivated me to trial a paint job. Nice mini with plenty of detail.

Lastly, a figure I've had for a while, primed and based but sadly neglected, from Khurasan, I don't recall which pack, but it's a nice simple paint scheme for a robot- Vallejo oily steel, black wash, oily steel drybrush, and a little white detailing.

So I've assembled them for a group shot, though no-one seems to want to smile for the camera!

There we are then, I'm just off to stoke up the barbecue- lovely weather here in the UK at the moment, so I shall be looking for something frosty to drink while I cover the washing in smoke. Adios Amigos!!

Gunrunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00428966187307220717noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7229145415069940061.post-60584314478316810472013-07-03T10:47:00.000-07:002013-07-03T10:47:35.732-07:00A Slight Diversion

As I mentioned in my last post, I thought I would make an attempt to paint something different, just to shake me out of a bit of a rut, so I bought just a few 15/18mm AB Miniatures Napoleonic range from 'Fighting 15s' here in the UK. I put up some pics of some of them unpainted, but having spoiled a few with paint, I decided, possibly against my better judgement, to post some pictures for your amusement (and probably 'abusement'!). I know that there will almost definitely be historical inaccuracies in both colour and uniform adornments, but for those of you out there who have a much greater knowledge of uniforms of the period, be kind- these figures merely represent a little diversion from the norm, but I have enjoyed painting them.

First up, some reclining marksmen from the 95th Rifles:

I still have to varnish and apply static grass, so the bases look a little bare.

There were 3 poses of Riflemen in the prone position in a pack of 9 minis- the other was a mixture of these two- reaching for a cartridge to reload, but wearing a shako and not bareheaded.

These other two pictures are, obviously, Royal Artillery. This was in small part a labour of love for me because it was my father's regiment in WW2, although I believe he had weapons that were slightly more sophisticated! RIP Dad.
I think the challenge of painting something completely different was good for me. I had to be more disciplined to get close to something historical, and it was nice to use some brighter colours. One of my sons bought me the Vallejo Napoleonic paint set for Fathers' Day, so that is all I used, apart from the brass on the barrel of the 9 pounder.

I think I will go off on a tangent every now and then and try something different- I have some WW2 vehicles and figures, Peter Pig Moderns, and I took advantage of the offer from 15mm.co.uk and ordered their Use Me ruleset for zombies, which included a set of zombie figures. It seems that my blog is incorporating more than Sci Fi, but only in a very small way.

I have an idea for running some solo Sci Fi games, and writing them up as a running narrative with pictures from the games, to produce an ongoing story- would there be any interest in that do you think?

Thanks for reading!
Anyway, encouraged by the kind words of Jay (of 'Jay's Miniature Enterprises' blog-excellent entertainment) I have plucked up courage again, so here goes.

I have finished off my first squad of Armies Army Future Brits
and here they are, and following Jay's excellently painted Oddzial Osmy Media crew, here is my offering, painted about a month ago.
Also, in the 'OO' camp, yesterday, whilst watching the Lions v Wallabies rugby match, I did these two excellent minis from their Vistula Legion range- long range reconnaissance pack.
There have been other figures, but nothing particularly new. I have received a lot of terrain from Mad Mecha Guy recently, several buildings, the road and walls pack, containers etc, and will post some pictures when a reasonable amount is painted.

Finally, here are a couple of pics of future projects. My first foray into wargaming was Napoleonic, so having scoured the web for opinions about the best 15/18 mm figures in this era, a lot of people recommend AB Miniatures, although I realise that this is purely subjective. Anyhow, I ordered a few to paint as mini dioramas, as I can't see myself painting up a new mountain of lead- I'm in way over my head as it is!

French Hussars, two prone 95th Riflemen (I've just been re-watching the boxed set of 'Sharpe' DVDs) and a British and French sapper. I also have a 9 pounder British cannon and crew lurking in the drawer.

And last but not least, I based up these GZG trucks I bought recently. There's just something about these chunky vehicles I really like!
They are going to see duty as Security for some faceless conglomerate like a mining company or similar.
I seem to be using a lot of greens at the moment- different ones admittedly. Still, I quite like the idea of adding GW's 'Bad Moon Yellow' to the mix, rather than just adding white and washing it all out a bit. I suppose it has come out a little fluorescent, but at least there is contrast!

Gunrunnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00428966187307220717noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7229145415069940061.post-58527368853849298282013-04-29T08:00:00.000-07:002013-04-29T08:00:14.907-07:00Armies Army Commonwealth BritsHaving posted a single figure from this range last week, I managed to paint a few more during a hectic weekend, so here is my first 'half squad'!

Once again, I found them great fun to paint. It's a fairly limited palette, but in theory, that should take me less time. Unfortunately, theory and reality seldom seem to coincide in my experience, but it didn't take any pleasure away from the painting.

As I have a good number of this range to paint, I'm wondering if I should attempt some form of camouflage for the Commandos, just for a bit of variety. I'm always unsure about camo at this scale- I find it difficult to achieve in 15mm- but I would like to try. Then there are the figures in power armour......should I do a different scheme for these as well? Decisions, decisions.

As usual, helpful comments welcomed!
